The Hands & Foundation: An Ode to Theodosia Okoh

The greatest point of national pride of any country is the country’s flag, and Ghana is no different. Beyond the flag, we celebrate  the hands behind the flag and the foundation of Genesis Residences, our flagship development: Theodosia Okoh.

The Ghana flag, a national monument that represents this country and all that it stands for, was designed by Theodosia Salome Abena Kumea Okoh. She did not know, as she designed this piece of cloth in her quaint home in North Ridge, that she was not only creating a symbol of our country’s pride but also setting the foundation for Equilibrium Partners. Equilibrium Partners has the honour of building the Genesis Residences; a project we believe will bring national pride to all Ghanaians. The original location of the home of this great woman is an ideal starting point.

Theodoisa was a teacher, an artist, a mother and a wife. After an advertisement called for designs for the flag for the newly emancipated Gold Coast, she submitted her designs. When asked about the reason for the colours in the Ghana flag, she explained: ‘I decided on the three colours of red, gold and green. Green because of the geography of Ghana. Ghana lies in the tropics blessed with rich vegetation. The colour gold was influenced by the mineral rich nature of our lands. Red commemorates those who died or worked for the country’s independence. The five-pointed lone star, which is the symbol of African emancipation and unity in the struggle against colonialism…’

She did more than her contribution to the identity of Ghana and the patriotic spirit carried in the flag. Theodosia Okoh was the first female chairperson of the Ghana Hockey Association. She later became the President of the Ghana Federation, a position she held for more than 20 years. As chairperson and president of the Ghana Hockey Association, she was able to save the sport and return it to its glory. For this reason, the National Hockey Stadium was named after her to honor her contribution to the sport.

Through the development of The Genesis Residences, Equilibrium Partners, honors this great daughter of the land. Theodosia was a pioneer and we carry it on.Equilibrium Partners will keep the pioneering spirit alive with the Genesis Residences and other developments. The Genesis, a 30-unit development that houses some of the best quality finishings and social amenities is the first high-end Edge Certified residential development in the country.
